Woodwinds audition requirements vary by instrument. Carefully review all undergraduate and graduate audition requirements for your selected instrument(s).
Undergraduate woodwinds audition requirements
Applicants should play a major scale 2 or 3 octaves up and down and a chromatic scale, from Low B flat to the highest note the applicant is comfortable, and then back down. Applicants should also play two contrasting pieces (etudes or solos).

Examples of appropriate repertoire include but are not limited to Ibert Concertino da Camera, Glazunov Concerto, Creston Sonata, Heiden Sonata, Maurice Tableaux de Provence, and Ferling Etudes. Applicants should also prepare all full-range major scales as well as a full-range chromatic scale.

Graduate woodwinds audition requirements
Applicants should play 2 pieces of contrasting styles for the audition, for a total of 10 - 12 minutes of music, plus an etude or 2 orchestral excerpts.

- Exposition of the Mozart Clarinet Concerto
- 3 standard orchestral excerpts of your choice
- One unaccompanied 20th or 21st century piece
- One movement from a sonata or concerto of your choice

Prepare three movements of works that represent your lyrical and technical capabilities, with at least one work from the standard repertoire (e.g. Ibert Concertino da Camera, Tomasi Concerto or Ballade, Maurice Tableaux de Provence, Creston Sonata or Concerto, Denisov Sonata). Applicants should also prepare all full-range major and harmonic minor scales as well as a full-range chromatic scale.

How to register for an audition
You must submit an application to the University before registering for an audition. You do not have to be admitted into the University to register for an audition. An audition registration form will become available via your Application Gateway in October. Complete an undergraduate application or a graduate application to the University of Louisville.

As an undergraduate applicant, in order to be considered for a music scholarship, students must complete the application and audition process by March 1.
As a graduate applicant, in order to be considered for music scholarships and assistantships, performance/pedagogy applicants must complete the application by February 15 and audition by March 1. For Graduate Music Composition, Music Theory and Music History applicants, the application, portfolio and/or writing sample must be submitted by January 15.
