Our Vision

For those we serve

We will provide high quality, reflexive, person-centered, Community Music Therapy (CoMT) informed musicking experiences that perform health with a variety of people populations in the greater Louisville area. We will reduce barriers to accessing health by providing families and facilities with affordable, fair market value services through our sliding scale and a not-for-profit therapy business model. We will explore therapeutic approaches that value human experience, create rich musical experiences and explore resource-mobilization for health aims.

For our profession

We will regularly engage in the hands-on training of the future generations of music therapy professionals as practicum students, music therapy interns and local young professionals. Additionally, we will challenge traditional values of therapy, music and music therapy to promote an inclusive, creative and collaborative practice that strengthens our profession through conscientious scholarly activity. We will provide invigorating, inspiring and encouraging continuing education opportunities to the local and greater music therapy community.

For our communities

We believe everyone deserves music, period. We will aim to use our resources as representatives of the University of Louisville and School of Music to increase access to music and health, while mitigating inequalities and systems of oppression that negatively impact either.

What is music therapy?

As defined by the American Music Therapy Association, music therapy is: the clinical and evidence-based use of music interventions to accomplish individualized goals within a therapeutic relationship by a credentialed professional who has completed an approved music therapy program.

Who provides services?

At the clinic you, your child, or loved one will receive services from a Board Certified Music Therapist (MT-BC credential) who has gone through the proper training, clinical supervision, internship and has passed the board certification exam.

The MTC is a clinical training site for music therapy students. Students who provide services as part of their practicum experience will be directly supervised by a present MT-BC. Students who provide services as part of their internship experience may be directly or indirectly supervised by a MT-BC. If you have questions or concerns about who is providing services please do not hesitate to contact us.

What does the clinic provide?

We are one of the only providers in the Kentuckiana area that offers discounts based on the National Sliding Fee Scale. This is determined by income and number of dependents using the National School Lunch Program data for eligibility requirements. If you think you may qualify for a discount, please inquire with the music therapy business office so that you may bring the necessary documentation to submit for possible qualification.

We provide in-clinic individual and group services. We also provide services to community partners and individuals throughout the greater Louisville area. We are always looking for ways to increase access to music therapy services for you.

You. Deserve. Music.

My six-year-old daughter looks forward to her sessions at the UofL Music Therapy Clinic each week ... she loves her energetic and engaging therapist, and loves getting her hands on so many musical instruments! I appreciate that each session nurtures my daughter's inherent joy in music while helping her process ‘Big Feelings.' In addition, she is learning a number of coping mechanisms that will benefit her in daily life. For us, music therapy is the perfect combination of hard work and fun.

Coming to the University of Louisville's music therapy program has been more than a wonderful experience. Over the past four months (they) have transformed my daughter into a musically interactive, polite and structured child. She came to the program having trouble with day-to-day transitions, communicating frustrations and sharing, but with the program's focus on therapy through music's structure, tempo and creativeness, she is now able to shift from one activity to another while using polite communication when expressing her wants and needs. Our family looks forward to every session, especially my daughter.

My son is autistic and he, generally, communicates through a speech device. Since attending music therapy, however, he tends to verbalize vocally after we have attended the clinic. He really enjoys utilizing his keyboard at home even though we’ve had it for years. It has been a great blessing to hear my son speak through music, and the impact this has had on his life and my own is immeasurable.
