BA Music, New Media – Admission Requirements
There are two emphases available in the BA Music, New Media degree - Academic and Applied. Students choose one emphasis, based on their interests and goals.
In the Academic Emphasis, students study music performance in a classroom setting (guitar, piano, voice, performance technology). In the Applied Emphasis, students study music performance on a particular instrument in a one-on-one lesson format.
Undergraduate audition requirements
Portfolio: Applicants must submit an online portfolio of 3-5 examples of original work that demonstrates their experience and readiness for the New Media program and should highlight their existing work with technology. Portfolio items may include (but are not limited to) music productions in a sequencer or DAW (GarageBand, Logic, FL Studio, etc.), music compositions, recordings of songwriting, sound recordings and audio engineering work, performance videos, music and sound for video or multimedia, etc. Any other materials related to your knowledge and/or experience using technology to create audio or visual art may be included. (The goal of the New Media portfolio review is to determine the creative potential of a prospective student as it pertains to music technology. Professional productions or commercial-ready work is not expected.)
Personal Statement: Applicants must submit an essay or personal statement (approximately 250-375 words) that includes a summary of academic achievements in music, music technology, and/or related areas, a description of interests and experiences relevant to the New Media degree program, significant accomplishments, and career goals. This document should also describe the work examples submitted in the portfolio.
The New Media portfolio and personal statement should be submitted by posting the materials to Google Drive, DropBox, or other file sharing platform and providing the link to the School of Music at gomusic@louisville.edu. Please be sure that the link to your portfolio does not require a password or any special credentials to access your materials.
Musicianship Assessment: Applicants must complete a musicianship assessment. The assessment will examine an applicant’s readiness to be successful in music theory and other music-related coursework. Applicants will be asked to prepare and perform one original work on any instrument or voice. Applicants are welcome to use a backing track to accompany their performance. Applicants will be asked to perform a major scale of their choice and identify elements of music notation – clef, key signature, meter, etc. The musicianship assessment will be scheduled after the portfolio is received. The assessment can happen in-person or online via a video conference call, depending on availability.
Please Note: Music & New Media: Academic Studies emphasis applicants are not eligible for a music scholarship because an audition is not required for the degree.
