Alumni highlights fall 2025

Director of Development Mark Kaczmarczyk interviewed composer Tyler Taylor, (BM’15), who has joined the Cleveland Orchestra as the Daniel R. Lewis Composer Fellow for a term of three years, beginning with performances of his orchestral work Permissions, conducted by Welser-Möst on October 30, November 1, and November 2. Taylor has also been commissioned by the San Francisco Symphony. Tyler was a Porter Scholar at the UofL, studied the horn, and subsequently pursued graduate studies at the Eastman School of Music (MM), and later at IU Jacobs (Ph.D). Following graduation, he became a founding member of the Louisville Orchestra’s Creator Corps. Look for an in-depth interview with Tyler Taylor in the 2026 issue of Coda.
Lucia (Chia) Patino (BM’90) directed the world premiere of “The House on Mango Street” at the 2025 Glimmerglass Festival in Cooperstown, NY. The opera was inspired by the classic book by Sandra Cisneros, who co-wrote the libretto. Patino, who currently serves on the music faculty at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, participated in a “Works and Process” event at the Guggenheim Museum in NYC to promote the Glimmerglass production. She has previously directed for Seattle Opera, Aspen Music Festival, and Florida Grand Opera. From 2009-19 Patino served as Artistic and Executive Director of the Teatro Nacionel Sucre in Quito, Ecuador.
Alan Mason (BM’89) is a California-based finance executive and musician (oboe) who recently retired as a Managing Director at Blackbaud. Alan is the Prior President of the Association of California Symphony Orchestra Board. An oboist and former member of the Louisville Orchestra, Alan writes that “The UofL was very important to me and I have nothing but gratitude for the role it played in my life and career.”
Thomas Masse (BM’89) writes that he recently retired as Dean of the School of Music at Stetson University. Formerly the Deputy Dean at the Yale School of Music, Masse studied clarinet with Dallas Tidwell at the UofL, received the MM from Yale, and a DMA from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. He currently resides in Guilford, CT.
Kaitlyn Purcell (BM’24) writes that she is currently completing her second year as a Fulbright Scholar in Taiwan, where she is teaching English and Music.
