Music faculty and students playing jazz music at Jazz Education Network Conference 2026

This January, our jazz department and University Symphony Orchestra traveled to New Orleans for the Jazz Education Network (JEN) Conference. This annual gathering featured outstanding performances, educational sessions, exhibits, and numerous special events. Thousands of musicians, educators, and jazz enthusiasts from around the globe attend each year to celebrate and learn more about this uniquely American art form.

Our students and faculty were honored performers at the festival, presenting the Jazz Fundamentals Suite, composed by our own Professor Gabe Evens. Their performance represented a meaningful contribution to the conference, showcasing the strong musical foundation cultivated at the University of Louisville. Professor Kimcherie Lloyd says that this event “highlighted the dedication and artistry of our students and faculty while reinforcing the University of Louisville’s national presence in jazz education.”

Reflecting on the piece, Lloyd adds, “Just as powerful as the music itself is its human inspiration, embodied in the movement titles: Struggle, Resilience, Rebellion, Equity, Individuality, Community, Joy, Beauty, and Freedom — themes that speak to both the history of jazz and our shared human experience.”

One of our student musicians, Martin Vivas, shared, “Performing for the first time at Jazz Education Network 2026 in New Orleans marks a significant milestone in my development as an international student, creating new performance opportunities and meaningful professional connections with jazz musicians from around the world.”

Looking ahead, Louisville will host the 2027 JEN Conference at the Galt House. We are excited to welcome this remarkable event to our city and look forward to the incredible opportunities it will bring to our campus and the surrounding community.
